A fun and addictive way to get a handle on the basics of any language. My only gripe is that some of the Spanish words seem to be derived from Latin Spanish rather than Castillian (only about half a dozen words though). Other than that, it is a great tool, which I'd recommend to anyone looking into starting to learn a new language. Full Review

Do not make the mistake of pushing add a course unless you are 100% sure! I pressed add a course and it WOULD NOT let me exit until I added a course. After I chose a course when I tried to go back to my French course I realized all my progress had been deleted. Thanks a lot for throwing away 3 months of work. Full Review

A very good free language app. However the advertising and meta-game aspect are annoying. Also Duo favors idiomatic translation instead of literal, uses too many multiple choice questions, and asks you to define words taken out of context (the same word could be a verb or noun). Full Review

I have traveled to Germany several times, Duolingo has been the only tool I've used to build my vocabulary. Nothing replaces conversations in another culture, but Duolingo helps provide a solid foundation of knowledge to bridge the gap for a beginner who is trying to become fluent! Full Review

Not as good as memrise but it is free. The thing I loved about memrise is that they gave you little pictures that familiarised the words. Which made remembering them very easy. Implement that and you'll destroy the competition, REAL TALK! Add that and its an easy five stars! Full Review

The Japanese course in this app is garbage. They flip flop between versions of the words in the written language which doesnt give you a chance to properly learn. Also when translating sentence you can only select single characters and not words making it incredibly hard to learn single words and pronouciation. Full Review

I am a visual learner. By doing Duolingo, I am able to visualise the Norwegian words and spellings when doing more formal training. I would have preferred to learn words and phrases I might ACTUALLY use, rather than about the wolf eating the moose! But hey ho, this is free and fun and very helpful! Update 15.2.18 - they have introduced ads which are annoying and which is expensive if you wish to remove them. Full Review

It's really impressive what they've managed to do with this app, especially since the free version is essentially the whole experience (the paid version just gives you a bonus, imo). My main reason for trying this finally was because they added Japanese, but be aware it's still in beta. That means there's less content and variation in tasks, and things get a bit weird sometimes, but having studied Japanese before I'm aware of how difficult it is to find a way to teach it in this format, and honestly I'm pretty impressed with what they've managed to put together so far. I look forward to seeing it fleshed out. My one complaint is that the comment and reporting system on the mobile app doesn't work as well as it does on the desktop. I can't see my comments after posting and I can't tell if I've had any responses, and I can't see how to report issues with tasks. Other than that I'm impressed! Full Review

This app is absolutely fantastic. Hands down the best free language learning app I've tried! 100% recommend. The only thing I don't like (at least with the French), is that you don't always get a literal translation, which can get confusing. Full Review

Great free app to learn languages. My only complaint is it doesn't explain why you would use a particular word instead of another. EG which version of the word "the" you would use depending on masculine, feminine or neuter in German and why. Apart from that, love it 😁 Full Review

It is a great app to learn languages.. great over all..except that "test out" button that is located at the same position as the button to skip the ads.. that's so annoying. Until I realized the part with the 3 hearts were the "test out" section, I was surprised that some thema that were supposed to be 7 or 8 lessons only were completed after 2 lessons.. so, because of that, I missed out a lot of lesson .. It's great so far, have had no problems with the app. Ads can by annoying but it's free so what do you expect- there is an option to go ad free. It's repetitive but not annoyingly so and it's enjoyable. It has you repeat into to a microphone, type out sentences in English and Spanish. Also has pictures/ flashcards. I recommend it. Update: they totally updated German! Haven't checked the other languages I'm working on yet, though. Also, there's some repetition within the levels sometimes. Full Review

Great app, but the ads have gotten really out of hand, every time I launch it I see at least three of them. Sure, you can pay to remove them, but the price is pretty high if you're only casually using it in your spare time and aren't going to get anywhere near the value that their subscription could offer to a heavy user. ASL should be an offered language. Also, when ONE LETTER is wrong in a 6 plus word sentence, there should be a prompt to "double check" rather than marking the entire thing wrong for one typo. It would be an easy feature to add and would greatly enhance the learning experience, especially for the more difficult phrases. Full Review

Easy to use, easy to get into, and I like that it gives you daily reminders and notifications. Also, do not forget that there is an actual online component to it, so you don't need to do it just through the app. My one complaint is that some of the exercises where you have to speak into your phone can be a little unforgiving, like if your phone is giving you fits. Also, I would prefer if it taught you the basic alphabet of each language first instead of you having to try to pick it up from words as you go. For example, languages like Russian use completely different alphabets that are unfamiliar to a native English speaker, so the exercises where it tells you a word and you have to write out the Russian equivalent are very difficult to pick up. It is unbelievable that it's free. DUOLINGO has the same or better features than apps costing a lot of dinero! Fast, good pedagogy, very natural-feeling. You can adjust the program goals to your ability and availability. Learning a language takes WORK and practice and persistence, but Duolingo adds an element of fun. No doubt you'll need to seek out fluent speakers to practice and develop fluency, but with regular use of this app, you can build a good foundation pretty fast. Full Review
